Two separate social media posts made serious criminal allegations about former Army Commander General Shavendra Silva and Retired Major General Jagath Dias. The first claimed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had launched an investigation against Shavendra Silva over the alleged massacre of civilians in the Wellamullivaikkal area. The second claimed that investigations had been initiated against both Shavendra Silva and Jagath Dias over a missing gold stock in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area. Both posts were designed to look like reports from credible media outlets. We investigated both claims.
Claim 1 – Social Media Posts :
Posts circulated on social media claiming that the CID had launched an investigation against General Shavendra Silva over the alleged massacre of civilians in the Wellamullivaikkal area.

Fact-Check :
If the CID had launched an investigation against General Shavendra Silva over alleged civilian killings in the Wellamullivaikkal area, mainstream media would have reported it. Our investigation found no such report from any mainstream media outlet or official credible source.
Sri Lanka Police Media Division
We contacted the Sri Lanka Police Media Division for confirmation. Officials stated that no such investigation has been reported to date.
Former Army Commander Shavendra Silva
We also contacted General Shavendra Silva directly. He stated that the claim is completely false.
Asian Mirror Did Not Publish This Post
The circulating post was formatted to resemble an article from Asian Mirror. Asian Mirror published a statement on their official Facebook page confirming that the post is fake, that it was prepared using their news format without their knowledge, and that they did not publish any such article.

Claim 2 – Social Media Posts :
A separate post claimed that investigations had been initiated into Shavendra Silva and Jagath Dias over a stock of gold that went missing in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area.

We investigated the accuracy of this claim.
Fact-Check :
If investigations had been initiated against Shavendra Silva and Jagath Dias over a missing gold stock in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area, mainstream media would have reported it.
Mainstream media did report in June 2026 that the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had launched a broad investigation into what happened to the tons of gold held by Kumaran Pathmanathan (KP), the LTTE’s head of international finance, after the end of the war. That report is available here. However, none of those reports mentioned any investigation specifically targeting Shavendra Silva or Jagath Dias regarding a missing gold stock in Puthukkudiyiruppu.
News 1st Did Not Report This Claim
The post was formatted to resemble a Sirasa News 1st broadcast. We checked the official News 1st Facebook page and found no such post. The News 1st Digital Manager also confirmed that they did not report this story and did not publish any such social media post.
Sri Lanka Police Media Division
We contacted the Police Media Division again for Claim 2. They confirmed that no report has been received regarding any investigation against Shavendra Silva and Jagath Dias over a missing gold stock in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area.
Former Army Commander Shavendra Silva
Shavendra Silva also stated that this claim is also completely false.

Conclusion :
Our investigation confirms that both sets of social media posts are false. The claim that the CID is investigating General Shavendra Silva over alleged civilian killings in Wellamullivaikkal has no basis. The claim that Shavendra Silva and Jagath Dias are under investigation over a missing gold stock in Puthukkudiyiruppu is equally false.
The Police Media Division confirmed both claims are without foundation. Shavendra Silva personally denied both as well. Asian Mirror confirmed the Claim 1 post is a fabrication using their format. News 1st confirmed the Claim 2 post is similarly fabricated. The BRIBERY Commission’s ongoing investigation into KP’s gold is real, but it has not targeted Shavendra Silva or Jagath Dias.
