Explainer:

Vesak Poya Day is regarded as the most significant and sacred full moon observance in the Buddhist tradition. It is commemorated by Buddhists worldwide in honor of the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha; in 2026, the Vesak festival marks the 2570th year of the Buddhist Era.

Vesak Poya in Sri Lanka holds profound religious and cultural significance. On this day, Buddhists visit temples for worship, observe precepts, offer alms, and express their devotion through decorative displays, including lamps, Vesak lanterns, and light offerings.

Vesak Poya is on May 1st according to the 2026 calendar

According to the 2026 Sri Lankan calendar, two full moon days occur in May. Vesak Poya falls on May 1, coinciding with World Workers’ Day; consequently, May 2 (Saturday) was declared a government, bank, and commercial holiday. The calendar further designates the May 30 Poya as Adiposaon Full Moon Poya Day.

A request from the Mahanayake Theros to revise the date of the Vesak Full Moon Poya in 2026

A letter dated December 20, 2025, signed by the Venerable Theros of the Tri-Nikaya tradition and addressed to the President, states that, as the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha occurred during the auspicious month of Vesak, it is an established custom to observe Vesak on the full moon day corresponding to the fifteenth lunar day within that month, as determined by the constellations.

However, it notes that the calendars issued by the Ministry of Public Administration designate May 1, 2026, as Vesak Full Moon Poya Day and May 30, 2026, as Adhiposon Full Moon Poya Day. The omission of the Visa Nekatha for the former date has sparked considerable public debate regarding its recognition as Vesak.

The statement further notes that the Maha Sangha Council, under the leadership of the Mahanayaka Theros, having consulted astrological experts, determined that May 30, falling within the Visakha period, should be observed as the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day in accordance with established Shasana tradition.

Accordingly, in the relevant letter, the Mahanayake Theros requested the President to declare May 30, 2026, as Vesak Full Moon Poya Day and to direct state officials to observe that date for all traditional religious, secular, and state ceremonies associated with Vesak.

Simultaneously, an inquiry was made with the Scheduler of the Malwatta Viharaya, Venerable Mahawela Rathanapala Thero. He stated that the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha occurred under the auspicious Visakha sign, and that the Poya Day falling on May 1 does not correspond to that alignment. However, the four Mahanayake Theros jointly issued a statement indicating that, as the Visakha Nakatha falls on the Poya Day of May 30, and in accordance with explanations set out in the Atthakathas, the 30th should be recognized as Vesak Poya.

State Vesak Festival on May 30th

The Cabinet, at its meeting held on 30 March, approved a joint proposal submitted by the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government and the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs to conduct the 2026 State Vesak Festival centred at the ancient Midellawala Temple in the Thihagoda area of Matara District. This year’s State Vesak Festival will be held under the theme “Abhittharetha Kalyana” (Let us unite for the common good) and is scheduled to be observed as Vesak Week from 27 May to 2 June 2026, during which various Buddhist programmes will be organised and implemented island-wide. Further details are available here and provided here.

Accordingly, the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Professor Chandana Abeyratne, informed the Malwatta and Asgiri Mahanayake Theros that it has been decided to hold this year’s State Vesak Festival on 30 May. Addressing the media after informing the Mahanayake Theros, the Minister stated that although the Poya Committee had previously recommended observing Vesak Poya on 1 May, it was ultimately decided, taking into consideration the request of the Mahanayake Theros of the Tri-Nikaya, to hold the State Vesak Festival on 30 May, in accordance with the Committee’s recommendations. However, the Minister further stated that, as any Poya day may be utilized for religious observances, there is no impediment to conducting religious activities on the Poya Day falling on 1 May.

May 31st declared a public holiday

In accordance with the Holidays Act, and as stipulated in the Gazette notification issued by the Minister of Public Administration in 2025, the day following Vesak Poya, Saturday, May 2, has been declared a public and bank holiday for the year 2026. Nevertheless, at the request of the Mahanayake Theros and other relevant parties, the Government has decided to conduct the State Vesak Festival on the Poya Day falling on May 30 and to declare the following day, May 31, as a holiday. According to the calendar, May 31 falls on a Sunday. Nonetheless, following the announcement that the State Vesak Festival would be held on May 30, no amendment had been made to the existing Gazette notification concerning the holiday on the day after Vesak Poya.

Even so, on 21 April, a notification issued under the signature of the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government amended the previously designated public holiday from 2 May 2026 to 31 May 2026. The statement further noted that, in view of the Cabinet decision of 30 March declaring Vesak Week from 27 May to 2 June, the amendment has been effected in accordance with the powers conferred upon the Minister under Section 10(1)(b) of the Holidays Act No. 29 of 1971.

Mainstream media outlets reported the declaration of Sunday, May 31st, as a public holiday here and also here.

Declaring the day after Vesak Poya (Sunday) as a public holiday

When asked about the declaration of Sunday, May 31, as a public holiday, the Ministry of Public Administration explained that although May 31 is a Sunday, the Vesak-related observances will take place on May 30. In accordance with the established practice of declaring the following day a holiday when Vesak Poya falls on a Saturday, Sunday, May 31, 2026, has been officially designated as a public holiday.

Additionally, during the Cabinet press conference on April 22, the Cabinet Spokesperson responded to a media inquiry by noting that whenever the day after Vesak Poya falls on a Sunday, it has traditionally been declared a public holiday.

A subsequent review was conducted to identify prior instances of Sundays being declared public holidays. This investigation confirmed that in 2016, Vesak Poya Day fell on a Saturday, and the following Sunday was declared a public holiday accordingly.

Thus, it is evident that two full moon days occur in May 2026 and that the Poya Day falling on May 1 was initially designated as Vesak Poya. However, following the request of the Mahanayake Theros and leading Nikayas, the Government has decided to hold the State Vesak Festival on the Poya Day of May 30, which falls on the auspicious Visakha Nakatha. Meanwhile, although the day following Vesak Poya was initially declared as May 2, 2026, in the 2025 Gazette notification, it has subsequently been revised to May 31 in light of the decision to observe Vesak Week from May 27 to June 2. It is also evident that this is not the first instance in which Sundays have been designated as public holidays.
