With the death of Queen Elizabeth II, many social media posts were shared related to the members of the British royal family, including Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.

This is our investigation related to a misleading claim which went viral which claimed that Meghan Markle was dressed in attire resembling during the Queen’s funeral.

Claims were widely shared on social media soon after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, implying that Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, wore a dress/outfit resembling the late princess Diana, paying tribute to the late princess.

The posts were titled “Meghan Markle paying homage to Princess Diana” along with a photo comparison of late princess Diana and Meghan Markle, both seen with Poppy flowers.

Fact Check

First, we were able to find the real context of the photos of Princess Diana and Meghan Markle, respectively, using a Google reverse image search.

The reverse image search indicates that the photo of Meghan was captured in November 2019, during the annual Remembrance Sunday Memorial ceremony in London as seen below.

Hence, it's clear that the photo was taken few years before Queen Elizabeth II death.

Then, we directed our attention towards the photo of late princess Diana. This was also capture during a similar also Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph, but in the year 1991.The photo can be viewed from here.

Remembrance Day , also known as Poppy Day, is commemorated to honor all the people who have died and didn’t return home after wars around the world. Remembrance Day marks the day World War One ended, in 1918 and Remembrance Sunday is also marked each year, this falls on the second Sunday in November. Members of the Royal Family and politicians attended memorial service and Poppies are worn by millions as a symbol to remember all the people who have given their lives for their country in war. Meghan and Royal Family Mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II

After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, we noticed that Meghan Markle along with other women of royal family wore black dresses to bid adieu to Queen Elizabeth II. However, we did not notice any poppies in Meghan’s dress in any of these instances.

Brooke Newman, a historian and associate professor of Virginia Commonwealth University, explained about this to the AFP new agency.

"Members of the royal family, and women in particular, face intense media scrutiny and therefore take great care with their clothing and jewelry choices," she said. "As the only person of African descent to marry into the royal family, Meghan has faced an unprecedented level of negative criticism about her fashion choices — regardless of how carefully she selects her outfits."

Conclusion

According to our investigation, we were able to confirm that an old photo of Meghan Markle is being shared as her outfit during Queen Elizabeth's funeral. The original photo was taken back in 2019 in the Remembrance Day Sunday ceremony. Princess Diana also wore similar type of dress at a similar Remembrance Day Remembrance Day Sunday ceremony in 1991.
