Fact Check

Investigation Process:

Reverse Image Search and Video Verification: Our initial step involved using reverse image search and various tools to trace the origins of the video. Despite efforts, we could not locate the original source or any previously documented video version. This lack of verifiable information raises suspicion about the authenticity of the content.

Police Media Division Inquiry: We also contacted the Police Media Division to verify if any complaints about this alleged attack had been lodged, as the victim also mentioned lodging a police entry. Police Media Division stated that they had not received any complaints from any of the police stations about such an incident connected to the election.

Election Commission Inquiry: We contacted the Election Commission for any official records related to this incident. Deputy Commissioner Piyumi Artigala confirmed that no complaint had been filed regarding such an attack.

However, the Election Commission did receive a complaint from the National People’s Power (NPP) party stating that the circulating video and accompanying claims were tarnishing their reputation.

Examination of Social Media Pages: Upon analysing the social media accounts responsible for spreading the video, we discovered that these pages were newly created. Their activity patterns suggest they were established to promote specific narratives and misinformation ahead of the election. These accounts show no credible or consistent history, further indicating that they may be part of a coordinated disinformation campaign.

Conclusion:

Based on the information gathered, no credible evidence supports the claim that JVP/NPP supporters attacked an individual for removing posters. Neither the Election Commission nor the Police have received complaints of such an incident, and the social media pages spreading the video appear to be newly created with the intent to disseminate misinformation.

This video and the related claims seem to be a fabricated attempt to create confusion and discredit the NPP on the eve of the presidential election. We urge the public to remain cautious and rely on verified sources for election-related information.JBJVP
