As Sri Lanka’s swift efforts to rescue the passengers of an Iranian ship attacked by the United States drew international attention, many people praised the move. At the same time, some people expressed views on social media claiming that this action could bring unnecessary trouble to Sri Lanka from the United States and other countries that support the United States. Meanwhile, social media discussions also emerged claiming that Sri Lanka, despite not being directly involved in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, had been named alongside Middle Eastern countries as a risky destination for travel. Fact Crescendo therefore decided to carry out an investigation to verify the truth behind this alleged risk.

Social Media Posts :

Amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, posts from an Australian media network circulated on social media claiming that Sri Lanka was a high-risk travel destination, alongside those countries.

These posts were widely shared as follows.

Following numerous requests to verify the accuracy of this claim, we decided to investigate the matter.

Fact Check :

First, we examined whether the Australian news channel 7NEWS had described Sri Lanka as a high-risk travel destination, as claimed above.

Our review found that 7NEWS was discussing global flight disruptions and high-risk travel zones mainly linked to the conflict in the Middle East. In that context, as shown on the map in the social media posts above, Sri Lanka was also marked as a country people should avoid travelling to, and the news presenters mentioned this as well.

No other major Australian mainstream media outlets have reported any new risk concerning Sri Lanka.

It could also be observed that Sri Lanka had not been newly added to the category of high-risk destinations by mainstream media outlets such as ABC News, SBS News, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Guardian Australia.

On 2 March 2026, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong released a press release warning of possible travel disruptions due to the ongoing Middle East conflict. The press release emphasised flight cancellations, airspace closures, and high-risk travel destinations, but Sri Lanka was not included.

For the latest guidance, Australians were advised to follow the official Smartraveller website. Smartraveller advised avoiding many destinations in the Middle East, including Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, Syria, the UAE, and Yemen. Travel to Jordan, Oman, and Saudi Arabia should be reconsidered if necessary.

Australian High Commission in Sri Lanka

The Australian High Commission in Colombo has clarified that Australia has not changed its travel advice for Sri Lanka, nor has it labeled Sri Lanka as a “high-risk” destination due to Middle East tensions. They emphasized that the information circulating online is misleading. Our email communication with the Public Diplomacy Officer of the Australian High Commission in Sri Lanka further confirms this.

The High Commission highlighted that for accurate and up-to-date travel guidance, travelers should only rely on the official Smartraveller website.

Smartraveller Travel Advice for Sri Lanka

According to Australia’s official travel advisory service Smartraveller, Sri Lanka is classified at Level 2, which advises travelers to “exercise a high level of caution.” This warning relates to public protests and general safety concerns, not the Middle East conflict.

The website was last updated on January 26, 2026, and that update remains in effect as of today (07). The update mainly mentions the situation following Cyclone Ditwah and advises travellers to seek official information from local providers about road repairs and the areas they plan to visit before travelling to Sri Lanka.

However, the update does not mention any increased risk related to the conflict in the Middle East. Therefore, it can be confirmed that the Australian government has not classified Sri Lanka as a “high-risk” country due to the situation in the Middle East.

Comparison of Sri Lanka Travel Advisories by Major Countries

We also checked whether other countries have labeled Sri Lanka as high-risk due to the conflict in the Middle East. No reports indicated such a classification. Examination of travel advice from countries like Australia, the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. shows that Sri Lanka remains at a medium caution level, based on general safety and public protests, not due to Middle East tensions.

Conclusion :

The claim that Australia has classified Sri Lanka as a “high-risk” travel destination due to the conflict in the Middle East is misleading.

Australia’s travel advice for Sri Lanka remains unchanged, primarily advising travelers to exercise a high level of caution due to public protests and general safety concerns.

It can therefore be concluded that the claim that Sri Lanka has been newly classified as a high-risk destination due to the conflict in the Middle East is not an official advisory issued by the Australian government, but rather a misleading news report aired by an Australian television news outlet.
