The humorous clip quickly accumulated millions of views during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with many users sharing it as a genuine candid moment involving the Manchester City striker. Given Haaland’s enormous online popularity and reputation for humorous off-field content, many viewers accepted the footage as authentic without questioning its origin.

However, our investigation found that the video is not genuine. It is an AI-manipulated face-swap created from an unrelated Chinese comedy sketch, making the viral claim false.

Fact Check

The Original Video Was Not Filmed With Erling Haaland

Reverse image searches and keyword searches lead to the original source of the footage, which is from a Douyin account belonging to a Chinese content creator known as “Xiao Si.” The authentic video was uploaded on June 15, 2026, well before the manipulated version began circulating internationally. The original caption roughly translates to: “The person in the mirror looks so familiar!”  Importantly, the original video contains no footage of Erling Haaland. Instead, it features a Chinese comedian performing a scripted comedy skit.

The creator confirmed directly to AFP that the video belonged to him. When informed that someone had edited the footage to resemble Haaland, he said he was unaware of the altered version and explained that he only operates accounts on Douyin, Kuaishou, and WeChat Channels.

Evidence the Viral Clip Was AI-Manipulated

Furthermore, we subjected the footage to forensic examination using Hive Moderation, a specialized AI detection suite. The results of this technical assessment demonstrated a high probability that the facial features were digitally synthesized or modified through artificial intelligence technology.
