Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s arrest and subsequent bail have dominated Sri Lankan political conversation this week. Amid that attention, a graphic formatted to look like a News1st news flash began circulating, attributing a pointed statement to former Speaker Ashoka Ranwala demanding that Yoshitha produce certificates proving his Navy recruitment and UK training were legitimate. We investigated whether Ranwala actually said this.

Social Media Posts :

A graphic designed to resemble a News1st broadcast dated 18 June 2026 attributes the following statement to former Speaker Ashoka Ranwala:

“The onus is now on Yoshitha Rajapaksa to produce his certificates and prove that his enlistment in the Navy and subsequent training in the UK was backed by legitimate qualifications.”

Fact-Check :

We found no record on News1st’s official website or its verified social media channels indicating that former Speaker Ashoka Ranwala made any statement demanding educational certificates from Yoshitha Rajapaksa. A review of Ranwala’s official statements and social media accounts found no evidence that he ever made such remarks.

News1st Confirms It Never Published This Graphic

We contacted the Head of Digital Media at News1st. He confirmed that the graphic was never published by the network. He stated clearly that it is a complete fabrication, created through unauthorized use of the channel’s official logo and visual template.

The NPP Media Division Confirms No Such Statement Was Made

We also contacted the National People’s Power (NPP) to comment. Their media division confirmed that Ranwala never made such remarks and has issued no statement concerning Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s certificates. The NPP dismissed the post as entirely fabricated.

The Arrest and Bail of Yoshitha Rajapaksa

Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was taken into custody on 17 June 2026 after responding to a summons from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). After being produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate’s Court, he was released on three personal bails of Rs. 5 million each, alongside a travel ban.

The investigation concerns allegations that Yoshitha failed to meet the required educational qualifications when he was recruited as a cadet officer in the Sri Lanka Navy in 2006, and that his O/L results were later altered to meet the requirement. He subsequently underwent over a year and a half of state-funded training at the Royal Naval College in the UK from January 2007. These details first surfaced during a 2016 parliamentary committee investigation.

Why Ranwala Was Targeted: His Own Certificate Controversy

The choice to use Ranwala’s name and image stems from a strikingly similar controversy that affected him directly. Following his appointment as Speaker of the 10th Parliament in November 2024, Ranwala faced sustained public and opposition pressure to produce documentation verifying his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees. His inability to produce these credentials in time led to his resignation as Speaker on 13 December 2024. Framing a person whose own career was derailed by a certificate scandal as the one demanding Yoshitha’s certificates was clearly intended as satire among social media users. Presenting it as a genuine statement Ranwala actually made, however, is false.
