A disturbing video circulating widely on social media is being shared with claims that it shows an Iranian military general confessing that he betrayed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, before dying by suicide during a live broadcast.
The short clip was shared alongside captions suggesting that the man revealed Khamenei’s location and later killed himself out of remorse. The claim gained traction amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and speculation about internal betrayal within Iran’s leadership.
However, a closer examination of the video and its origins reveals that the footage has been misrepresented online and is unrelated to any Iranian military official.
Social Media Posts
The viral posts claim that an Iranian general betrayed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by revealing his location to enemies and later appeared on a live broadcast to confess his actions. The video has circulated widely across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Fact-Check
No credible news reports confirm the incident
A review of major international news outlets did not identify reporting that supports the claim that an Iranian general confessed and died by suicide during a live broadcast. Major global media organisations, including Reuters, the BBC, Al Jazeera, and the Associated Press, have not reported such an incident. Iranian state media outlets, including the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) and Press TV, have also not published reports describing this event. If a high-ranking military official were to publicly confess to betrayal and die during a live broadcast, the event would be expected to receive significant international coverage. Given the lack of reporting from major international and Iranian outlets, the available evidence does not support the claim.
Reverse search traces the video to earlier posts
A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video shows that the footage existed online well before the recent claims linking it to Iranian leadership. The same video was posted in 2024 on the X account of the Kurdish media outlet Rojhelat News.
According to the caption accompanying that post, the man in the video was identified as Zahir Amini, described as a Kurdish resident from the city of Baneh in eastern Kurdistan who had been living in Erbil, Iraq. The translated caption stated that Amini died by suicide during an Instagram livestream. This earlier appearance of the video demonstrates that the footage predates the political narrative now attached to it online.
No evidence of Iranian generals dying by suicide
Following online rumours about the reported killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, we did not find credible reports that any Iranian generals had died by suicide. Most major coverage has focused on airstrikes and subsequent political turmoil, with reports of senior officials being killed in the strikes rather than by suicide.
Claims that IRGC Quds Force commander Esmail Qaani was executed or “allowed to commit suicide” remain unverified, and we did not find confirmation from major outlets of any suicide involving Iranian generals.
Conclusion
The viral claim that an Iranian general who “betrayed” Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei confessed on a live broadcast and then died by suicide is misleading and not supported by evidence. No credible international or Iranian news outlets have reported any such incident, despite how high-profile and extraordinary it would be if true.
Reverse image searches also show the same footage circulating earlier with a different context: it was shared in 2024 by Kurdish outlet Rojhelat News, identifying the man as Zahir Amini and stating that he died by suicide during an Instagram livestream.
