There are many Sri Lankans studying, working and some even settled in foreign countries like Canada, USA, Australia and European countries etc. There is a tendency among Sri Lankan youth also to migrate to many such countries. However, due to this interest, there is a lot of misinformation that gets widely circulated on social media related to foreign job opportunities as well. This is our investigation regarding such misleading viral messages regarding job opportunities in the USA.

Fact Check

First, we checked in mainstream media, whether the US government had announced to recruit 450,000 foreign workers to the USA, for the year 2022. We were not able to find any such media reports. We couldn’t find any such official notice on US Embassy in Colombo media releases either.

However, we were able to find a media report on CNBC which said that the US employers added around 450,000 jobs to US job market in 2022 January. Yet, among those 450,000 jobs there were only 23,000 government jobs. Interestingly, those jobs were not specified for migrant or foreign workers, as the viral social media posts had claimed. Seeking a clarification from the US Embassy in Colombo we contacted an US Embassy officer, who confirmed confirmed that the social media posts were false and misleading, and that the US Embassy in Sri Lanka or the government of the USA had not made any such announcements. She added that, while there would be some vacancies in US industries etc. and even in the government sector, the claims are totally misleading, and that the US government has not initiated any official scheme to awards 450,000 foreigners the opportunities to work in the USA in 2022, under a scheme called “Government of United States recruitment campaign 2022 with instant work permits”

Meanwhile, the US government also has also issued warnings to protect from immigration frauds and they urge the public to avoid being victims to such fraudulent scams and encourage to report them to the US government officials.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) warns to public about fake job listings and links attached to those posts. The FBI states how cyber criminals can use personal information taken from these links to do malicious acts. Details about this can be read from here | Archived.

According to our investigation, we were able to find out that the social media posts claiming that the government of the USA is recruiting 450,000 workers with instant work permits are false and misleading the public. The US Embassy in Colombo confirmed the same.
