Exaggerated claims about attention grabbing events can sometimes mislead the public. Here’s a fact check we carried out on one such viral claim.
Social Media Posts :
A post has been circulating on social media claiming that “The NPP set a world record by holding 21 May Day rallies on a single day, changing global May Day history.”

Therefore, we investigated whether the NPP actually set a world record by holding 21 May Day rallies across the island on May 1.
Fact Check :
The National People’s Power (NPP) decided to hold 21 May Day rallies across the country under the theme “People’s power for a people’s government.” JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva stated that due to the fuel crisis caused by the Middle East conflict and the need to use fuel carefully, organizing one large rally in Colombo would be costly. Because of this, they chose to celebrate May Day in a decentralized way in this manner.
Accordingly, the main May Day rally of the NPP was held in Maharagama under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Other rallies were held in several areas including Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Matale, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Kadawatha, Matara, Kandy, Chilaw, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, Ampara, Kalutara, Tangalle, Kegalle, Kaduruwela, Trincomalee, and Wellawaya.
Mainstream media also reported that the NPP held rallies in 21 locations on that day like this and this.
However, if this had officially set a world record, it would likely have been reported by both local and international media. But we found no such reports confirming a world record.
Usually, when a person, organization, or party sets a world record, the certifying body such as Guinness, World Record Academy issues an official certificate. We checked whether the NPP had published any such certificate, but found none.
Also, if such a documented world record had been set, it should be listed in the database of Guinness World Records at guinnessworldrecords.com, which holds the highest number of recognized world records. However, when we checked, we could not find any such record there.

This confirms that global organizations like Guinness do not officially track or verify “most rallies held simultaneously.”
Even though the NPP held 21 rallies on the same day, there is no evidence that this created a world record. We also looked into whether similar events have happened before.
In 2022, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna held rallies in 4 locations on May Day. In 2024, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya held rallies in 2 locations, Colombo and Nuwara Eliya. Based on available recent data, there are no clear records of any Sri Lankan party holding rallies in 21 or more locations on the same day. However, in Sri Lankan political history, there is no clear evidence that a single political party has held many May Day rallies in different places on the same day like this. Since there are no reliable historical records to compare with, we cannot independently verify this claim.
Why is this not a world record?
While organizing rallies in 21 locations is a significant effort in a country like Sri Lanka, larger countries often hold events on a much bigger scale.
India: Parties like The Bharatiya Janata Party BJP or CPI(M) hold May Day meetings and events across many states and different locations on the same day.
China: The Communist Party organizes official May Day celebrations almost simultaneously in many cities across the country, led by the party.
Internationally, there are many examples where political parties, coalitions, or trade union alliances organize May Day events in multiple locations on the same day. Similarly, it is also common for parties to hold a large number of election rallies in different places on a single day.
Brazil: the Workers’ Party (PT)
In Brazil, trade union groups led by the Workers’ Party organize May Day rallies across all 26 states every year. According to Brasil de Fato, even in recent years like 2025, large scale rallies have been held simultaneously in more than 20 major cities, including São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
France: Massive May Day protests in 2023
Although not organized by a single political party, on May 1, 2023, widespread rallies were held across France in protest against pension reforms. According to The Guardian and Al Jazeera, protests took place in over 300 locations across the country.
Additionally,
India: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
Although not related to May Day, during the 2014 election campaign, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed rallies across hundreds of locations using 3D hologram technology. According to NDTV reports, he addressed over 1,800 rallies within a few days and, on some days, more than 50 rallies were organized in different locations.
However, there is no verified record or Guinness World Record confirming these mass rallies as an official record setting achievement.
Global May Day Rallies – May 1, 2026
We also looked into the May Day rallies reported worldwide on May 1, 2026. On that day, numerous Labour Day rallies and marches were held not only in Sri Lanka but across many countries around the world.
In addition to the National People’s Power (NPP), the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) held its May Day rally under the leadership of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa at the P.D. Sirisena Grounds in Maligawatte, Colombo. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) held its May Day event at Campbell Park in Borella, while Sarvajana Balaya, led by Dilith Jayaweera, organized its rally at Henry Pedris Grounds in Colombo.Meanwhile, the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) held its rally at Hyde Park. Further details can be found here.
Similarly, in many countries around the world, large scale rallies were held focusing on workers’ rights, wage increases, and prevailing political conditions.
South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), together with its allied partner, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), held May Day rallies at 12 locations across the country. In Germany, the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), a major trade union federation with close ties to political parties, organized hundreds of May Day rallies in several major cities, including Berlin.
In France, various trade unions and left leaning parties jointly organized rallies in nearly 300 cities. However, these were not led by a single political party, but rather carried out as a collective effort of multiple parties and trade unions. In the United States, coalitions such as May Day Strong held events across several cities, but these too were organized by alliances of civil society and labor groups rather than a single political party.
Accordingly, as of May 1, 2026, there are no official reports confirming that any single political party elsewhere in the world held May Day rallies in more than 21 locations on the same day.

Conclusion :
Our investigation shows that the claim shared on social media stating that the National People’s Power (NPP) set a world record by holding 21 May Day rallies in a single day is false. No such official world record has been established by the NPP. While there is no clear evidence in recent Sri Lankan history of a political party holding May Day rallies in 21 locations on the same day, we are also unable to independently verify whether such an event has ever taken place in the country’s full political history. However, in recent times, the NPP can be identified as the party that held May Day rallies across 21 locations in a single day in Sri Lanka. While many political parties worldwide have organized large numbers of Labour Day events on the same day, none of these instances have been recognized as official world records.
