No Evidence Supports Viral Claim That Zelensky Died in a Russian Airstrike

International Politics

Social media posts circulating across platforms claim that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was killed in a Russian aerial attack on what was described as a “safe position” in Ukraine. Some versions of the posts further state that Ukrainian media should confirm or deny his death, implying that authorities are concealing the incident.

However, our investigation found no credible evidence supporting the claim. Major international news organizations, official Ukrainian government sources, and recent public appearances all confirm that Zelenskyy remains alive and continues to perform his presidential duties. The claim is false and resembles a recurring pattern of disinformation narratives targeting the Ukrainian president.

Social Media Posts

The viral claim is accompanied by a dramatic video showing a massive explosion and fireball, with posts alleging that the footage captured the Russian aerial attack that supposedly killed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Fact Check

No credible source has reported Zelenskyy’s death

A search of official Ukrainian government announcements, international wire services, and reputable media outlets found no evidence that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was killed in a Russian airstrike.

Neither the Office of the President of Ukraine, the Ukrainian government, nor major international news agencies have reported Zelenskyy’s death.

In a conflict as closely monitored as the Russia-Ukraine war, the death of a sitting head of state would immediately become global breaking news and would be confirmed through multiple independent sources.

The video does not show an attack in Ukraine

In addition to finding no evidence that Zelenskyy was killed, we also examined the video accompanying the claim.

A reverse image search and comparison with archived footage show that the video does not depict a recent Russian strike in Ukraine. Instead, it shows the massive explosions that occurred in the Chinese port city of Tianjin in August 2015.

The footage matches videos widely circulated following the catastrophic explosions at a hazardous chemical storage facility in Tianjin’s Binhai New Area on August 12, 2015. The disaster killed more than 170 people and injured hundreds more, becoming one of the largest industrial explosions in modern Chinese history. NBC News identified the footage as video recorded by a nearby resident during the Tianjin disaster, while multiple international media outlets published the same footage in their reporting at the time.

Zelenskyy has continued making public appearances

The strongest evidence contradicting the rumor is Zelenskyy’s continued public activity after the claim began circulating.

On June 24, 2026, the official website of the President of Ukraine published a presidential address delivered by Zelenskyy, demonstrating that he remained active in office.

Reuters has likewise continued reporting on Zelenskyy’s statements and activities throughout June 2026. On June 20, Reuters reported Zelenskyy warning Ukrainians about intelligence indicating a possible large-scale Russian missile attack, quoting his public video address urging civilians to pay attention to air raid alerts.

Five days later, on June 25 2026, Reuters again reported on Zelenskyy’s announcement that he had approved a 40-day diplomatic campaign aimed at increasing pressure on Russia to end the war, further confirming he was actively carrying out presidential duties. These verified appearances directly contradict the claim that he had died in a Russian attack.

Independent media also documented Zelenskyy’s activities

Multiple reputable international outlets likewise reported Zelenskyy’s activities during the same period.

Reuters published video coverage of Zelenskyy’s appearance at Reuters NEXT Europe on June 15, 2026. Al Jazeera also reported his visit to Kyiv’s historic Saint Sophia Cathedral following a deadly Russian strike on June 15, documenting him inspecting damage and speaking publicly.

These reports provide additional independent confirmation that Zelenskyy has remained publicly active.

False Narratives About Zelenskyy Have Circulated Repeatedly Since 2022

The latest death rumor is not an isolated case. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly been the target of false claims, fabricated documents, manipulated videos, and conspiracy theories intended to undermine his credibility and public image.

Fact Crescendo has previously investigated several such claims. In one case, social media users falsely alleged that Zelenskyy possessed a Russian passport and owned luxury property in Moscow. The claim relied on fabricated documents and unsupported allegations that had circulated repeatedly in pro-Kremlin information networks. Similar claims have previously been debunked by Ukrainian fact-checkers and independent media organizations.

Fact Crescendo also previously debunked viral claims that purportedly “leaked” security footage showed Zelenskyy visiting Jeffrey Epstein’s island and privately meeting the convicted sex offender. Investigations found that the images and footage circulating online were either AI-generated, digitally manipulated, or falsely attributed.

The current claim alleging that Zelenskyy was killed in a Russian airstrike follows this broader pattern of recurring disinformation campaigns targeting the Ukrainian president.

Conclusion

The claim above is false. There is no credible evidence that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy died in a Russian aerial attack. Neither the Ukrainian government nor any reputable international news organization has reported such an event. On the contrary, official presidential communications and multiple verified public appearances throughout June 2026 demonstrate that Zelenskyy remains alive and continues performing his duties as President of Ukraine.

Furthermore, the video accompanying the claim does not show an attack in Ukraine but footage from the 2015 Tianjin chemical explosions in China. The viral post therefore combines an unfounded death rumor with unrelated archival footage to create a misleading narrative about the Ukrainian president.
