A screenshot of an alleged Twitter message got viral on social media claiming that English cricketer Moeen Ali had demanded an apology from India and would boycott the Indian Premier League (IPL) and never would visit India to play cricket matches over its blasphemous statements.

However, when Fact Crescendo Sri Lanka investigation revealed that the screenshot was not posted from an authentic handle of the famous cricketer, Moeen Ali.

A Facebook User shared a Screenshot of a Tweet, claiming to have been a screenshot of the English all-rounder Moeen Ali.

The alleged tweet posted with an image of “I love Muhammad P.B.U.H ” read as “If India does not apologize for its blasphemous statement, I will never go to India to play match again, I will also boycott the IPL. And I will appeal to my fellow Muslim brothers to do the same I love Muhammad P.B.U.H ”

on 8th of June 2022 (08.06.2022) as seen in the screenshot below.

Fact Check

We looked for an official Twitter belonging to Moeen Ali yet were unable to find any verified account. We found two twitter accounts posting as Moeen Ali, however these were also inactive in the Twitter platform. (@MoeenaliAli) | ( @MoeenAli )

Then we searched for the Twitter handles shown in the viral posts.@Moeen_Ali18

We noticed that the Twitter account with the handle '@Moeen_Ali18' was suspended by twitter for violating the twitter rules.

Then we looked up for archives of this account and found that this account was created only in May 2022 and had over 8000 followers on Twitter.

In that archived version we also noticed in the Twitter account bio it was mentioned as “Not Official #Newsfeed” but a “Commentary Account Of #MoeenAli

The BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party) had suspended its spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal after their alleged controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad had triggered protests and condemnations in several Muslim-majority countries. More on this here

Hence, it’s clear that the viral Tweet had originated from an unofficial Twitter handle, and we did not notice English cricketer Moeen Ali commenting on this matter either.

Moeen Ali had recently revealed he would be willing to end his retirement from Test cricket if England ask him to tour Pakistan later this year

Conclusion:

From our investigation, we were able to find out that the English all-rounder, Moeen Alid is not active on Twitter, and he had not commented regarding the viral Tweets either.

The viral Tweet had been posted by a commentary account and NOT an official account of Moeen Ali, which had been created only a month ago in May 2022. Twitter has since suspended this unofficial account.
